A Beacon of Hope Rising from the Hills of Kalongo
In the heart of Northern Uganda, where the scars of war once overshadowed dreams, one man is proving that education can rebuild a community.
Dr. Okot Anjelo, an economist at the Central Bank of Uganda, has taken his life story — one of perseverance, struggle, and triumph — and turned it into a mission to empower the next generation. His creation, Safe Haven Academy Kalongo, is not just a school; it is a sanctuary of hope, discipline, and transformation for hundreds of children.
“Education is the proven permanent solution to poverty, diseases, and the challenges caused by war,” says Dr. Okot.
From Struggle to Strength: The Journey of Dr. Okot Anjelo
Born in Omiya Pacwa, Agago District, Dr. Okot’s path to success was anything but easy. Growing up during the insurgency in Northern Uganda, he faced displacement, poverty, and loss. Yet, even as schools closed and communities fled, his dream of education never faded.
After repeating Primary Seven five times due to financial hardship, his persistence finally paid off. Supported by World Vision scholarships, he excelled academically — topping his district at both O-Level and A-Level before earning a First-Class degree in Commerce at Makerere University.
His stellar performance led to scholarships abroad, including a PhD in Economics from the University of Leeds, UK. But rather than remain abroad, Dr. Okot returned home with a purpose: to uplift others through education.
The Birth of Safe Haven Academy
In 2021, at the foothills of Kalongo Mountain, Dr. Okot founded Safe Haven Academy, a private, community-based secondary school located just two kilometers northwest of Kalongo Town Council.
The name “Safe Haven” embodies its mission — a place of safety, opportunity, and holistic education even amidst hardship. Just as a “safe haven” currency protects value in times of uncertainty, this school safeguards the future of Uganda’s youth.
Core Objectives of Safe Haven Academy
- Provide high-quality education at an accessible cost to vulnerable children.
- Raise disciplined, God-fearing, and responsible youth who will drive community transformation.
- Offer a model institution for holistic learning, focusing on academics, character, and life skills.
Education as a Tool for Transformation
Dr. Okot’s belief in education is deeply personal. “I struggled to study — and many children in this region still face those same struggles,” he says. “The best gift I can give back to my community is the opportunity I once received.”
In Northern Uganda, years of war, displacement, and poverty have left education systems fragile. Schools are under-resourced, and many children drop out due to fees, hunger, or lack of motivation. Safe Haven Academy is confronting this head-on — providing a nurturing environment where children not only learn but rediscover hope.
Community Impact: Changing Lives Beyond the Classroom
In just two years, Safe Haven Academy has already begun transforming lives in Kalongo Town Council and surrounding villages. Its impact extends far beyond academics.
Key Achievements and Community Benefits
- Improved Discipline and Morale: Students are showing better performance and confidence in key subjects like English and Mathematics.
- Sports Excellence: Safe Haven students represented Agago District at regional and national competitions, showcasing their growing talent.
- Economic Growth: The school buys food and supplies locally, stimulating the village economy.
- Employment Opportunities: Teachers and staff are drawn from the local population, offering jobs and stability.
- Community Engagement: Regular parent meetings strengthen the bond between families, teachers, and learners.
“We’ve seen unity growing among teachers, parents, and students. Education is becoming a community mission again,” says Dr. Okot proudly.
Challenges and Resilience: Building Amid Scarcity
Like most social enterprises in rural Africa, Safe Haven faces its share of challenges. Infrastructure remains a work in progress — with temporary classrooms doubling as dormitories and labs still under development.
Current Challenges
- Limited facilities (science labs, computers, dormitories).
- Irregular fee payments due to poverty and drought.
- Unreliable water and electricity supply.
- Difficulty attracting full-time teachers to rural areas.
Despite these hurdles, progress continues steadily — new classrooms are rising, teachers’ quarters are under construction, and plans for a solar and borehole system are underway.
“This is development through determination,” says Dr. Okot.
Vision for the Future: A Model for Rural Education in Africa
Safe Haven Academy’s roadmap is ambitious yet rooted in community need.
Short-Term (1–2 Years)
- Add Senior 3 class.
- Complete teacher housing and perimeter fencing.
- Launch financial literacy training for students.
